51st International Quran Competition Opens in Malaysia

The 51st edition of international Quran competition kicked off last night, 5 August 2009, at Putra World Trade Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

According to IQNA, the opening ceremony of the competition attended by 82 Quran reciters from various countries and a number of Malaysian Muslims as well as the ones interested in Quran recitation. The program started at 8 pm local time with the arrival of honored guests and dignitaries, followed by the arrival of the prime minister of Malaysia at 8.40 pm.

Governors and Raja and Sultans of the various states of Malaysia were the other guests took presence at the ceremony at 8.45 pm. His majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Her Majesty the Raja Pemaisuri Agong, king and queen of the country arrived the meeting at 8.50 after which the national anthem was played and a do’a was recited as the beginning parts of the ceremony.

The guest qari, the top-ranked reciter of the contests held in 2006, recited some verses of Quran and this part followed by introduction session through which the king and queen shaked hands with quran reciters. Chairman of the main committee of the Quran assembly presented his speech before the royal address by the king who declared the official opening of the 1430H/ 2009 51sth Quran recital assembly.

Two national singing groups of Malaysia performed beautiful songs on the characteristics of God, and Quran as the word of God and the message of the holy prophet of Islam. The ceremony continued with Quran recitations by three reciters from Yemen, the West Timor and Kuwait, from among them the second reciter attended in women category, who recited some verses from surahs Bagharah, Tawbah and A’raf respectively.

This lag is largely due to the fact that human cognitive ability is still not fully understood. While computational capabilities are able to process extra-ordinary volumes of information and solve problems of high complexity, there is a need for these technologies to align and accommodate these limited human cognitive abilities. For example, technologies should be developed to target and address specific cognitive limitations in order to improve human performance. Hence, there is a need to understand how people and technology synergise in a cooperative partnership; a holistic alliance that enhances human potential. Saudi Landbridge Project, Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Landbridge Project is a part of the Saudi Railways Organization's railway expansion programme. The project is one of the biggest in the region with an estimated investment of $7bn, and involves construction of 950km of new line between Riyadh and Jeddah and another 115km track between Dammam and Jubail.

It also involves upgrading of the existing link between Riyadh and Dammam. The Landbridge will be the first rail link between the Red Sea and the Gulf and is expected to be completed by 2010.

The Landbridge project is being built on a build, operate and transfer (BOT) system and is expected to have a significant impact on the transport potential of the country. It will allow freight of cargo imported from East Asian countries via King Abdul Aziz Port in Dammam, and from Europe and North America via Jeddah Islamic Port. This would result in more transit cargo and savings in regional freight economy.

Jebel Ali Airport City (Al Maktoum International Airport)

DUBAI will have yet another superlative. This time the world's largest airport, Jebel Ali International Airport (JXB). To be built at a cost of Dhs30 billion, the airport could handle 120 million passengers a year. That will relegate the present topper, London's Heathrow with a throughput of 83.5 million, to the second rank.

Once completed, JXB will be the combined size of Heathrow and Chicago's O'Hare. Again, it will be ten times bigger than Dubai International Airport. The Department of Civil Aviation of the government of Dubai on Monday launched Jebel Ali Airport City (JAAC), a 140 square kilometre development. Central to the JAAC project is JXB.
Announcing the project at the ongoing Dubai air show, Dubai Civil Aviation Director for Engineering and Projects Khalifa Al Zaffin said the project is designed to serve Dubai's passenger and cargo air transportation needs until 2050 and beyond. It will have at least six parallel runways and as many concourses capable of handling more than 120 million passengers and more than 12 million tonnes of cargo per year.

The project will be completed in phases, and the first aircraft will land in the first quarter of 2007 on completion of phase one. The project will be financed through internal resources and consortium banking.
The other Jebel Ali Airport City developments include Commercial City, Aviation City, Residential City, a Golf Resort, a Science and Technology Park and Exhibition City.
The Commercial City, the financial and business heart of the project, will house up to 850 towers ranging from 50 to 300 metres in height.

Bahrain World Trade Center Activates Wind Turbines

You may remember that about a year ago we brought you news of the Bahrain World Trade Center, which was designed to have three giant turbines provide power to the building. Well, this past Tuesday, the project was finally completed, with the final testing and installation of the enormous wind turbines which power the building. This week, Bahrain WTC has, for the first time, activated all three 29m-diameter turbines at the same time!

It may not sound like much, but for such a high profile project, this represents a huge step. When we first brought you news of the project, the turbines had just been installed. And for the past year, all have slowly been tested and balanced, to ensure that they were working properly. But as of now, the project team can lay claim to having successfully incorporated a technology which had never been proven on a building, and certainly not at this scale. The three wind turbines are expected to provide around 10-15% of the power for both towers, representing about 3.5% of the total cost of the project.

“Having all three turbines spinning simultaneously represents an historic achievement for this landmark project and Atkins is excited to have been a major player in turning the original idea into reality” said Simha LytheRao Senior Project Manager for Atkins, designers for the project.

ECONOMIC don, Joseph Stiglitz today praised Malaysia for its sound regulatory framework that had protected its financial system in difficult times and suggested that it should give technical assistance to the United States and some European countries.
He said some developing countries have better financial regulatory framework compared with the developed nations.
“Malaysia and India did a much better job than the US. They should give technical assistance to US and some European countries as they understand good banking much better,” he told reporters on the sideline of Bank Negara Malaysia High Level Conference 2009 in Kuala Lumpur.
However, he expects Malaysia to be affected by the current financial crisis due to its export dependency.

He said many developing countries were export-based and Malaysia was one of the most successful.

Nakheel, Dubai’s master developer, today released details of progress at its communities at the heart of ‘New Dubai’ – Al Furjan, Jumeirah Village, Jumeirah Islands and Jumeirah Park. In this year alone, thousands of families will move into new homes across the developments.At Jumeirah Village, the handover of villas and town houses is underway, with the delivery of 2,200 homes phased for release throughout the year. Twenty-four ultra-luxury villas at Jumeirah Island Mansions are set for handover this spring, adding to this already vibrant community that has become one of the most sought-after residential locations in Dubai.

Jumeirah Park is also on track, with homeowners set to take up occupancy later this year. Built either the ‘most expensive’, ‘the first’, ‘the highest’, or ‘the only’ structure. Now, in 2012, it will also become home to the largest and tallest……… arch bridge.

Artificial islands in the shape of the world, a 7 Star hotel, a real life Jurassic Park, if any real city on our planet can claim the leading spot in creating the urban landscape of the future, it’s probably Dubai.
Construction is set to begin next month and by 2012 you can zoom past on this “world’s largest bridge”. What’s more spectacular is that out there they always stick to their deadline date and unveil the most sought after structures ever.

Here’s some info on the bridge as envisioned by New York architecture firm Fxfowle:

* It’s one mile long and 670 feet tall.
* It will have 12 lanes for traffic.
* It will cost 817 million dollars.

The latest Dubai megaproject, The World’s Biggest Racetrack, will have a capacity for 60,000 and a span of over half a mile. It’s an entire city built around “The Sport Of Kings”……horse racing.
The racecourse is already being hailed as the future horseracing capital of the world, given the infrastructure it plans for the industry. Unlike Ascot, Lexington or Newmarket, Meydan will in fact be an entire mixed use city development centered on the racecourse which will be the new home of the Dubai Racing Club and the Dubai World Cup.The word Meydan in Arabic describes a meeting place where people discuss, compete and achieve: an environment that encourages competition and co-operation to live side by side in harmony. It’s a man-made habitat created from scratch with lofty aspirations—”to promote excellence and fair play in sport, commerce and life”.

The landmark development is the vision of the remarkable Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and will span 76 million square feet and feature state-of-the-art dirt and turf tracks, while a world-class grandstand will boast a 55,000 to 60,000 capacity and span over half a mile.
It will feature a world-class hotel, more than 10 restaurants, the relocation of Godolphin Gallery, the home of Dubai Racing Club, a museum, as well as covered car parking for 10,000 and a 2.5 mile canal which will run from Dubai Creek to the racecourse.

The grandstand will also serve during the off-season as a major dining, business and conference facility.The target opening date is for the 2010 Dubai World Cup, and to mark its launch, the Dubai Racing Club has raised prizemoney for the showpiece race will be worth US$10 million to ensure the best horses in the world will be on hand for the opening.The racing facilities will be outstanding, but the venue has been designed to maximize entertainment all year around. It can stage conferences, concerts, functions, and carry on through the off-season. It will be a tourist attraction as well as a business community.

The Asia's first Legoland

Iskandar Investment Berhad (IIB) will sign a deal tomorrow with the Lego Group, the Danish manufacturer of interlocking plastic bricks, to develop the theme park in Nusajaya.The theme park, an integral component of Iskandar Malaysia, will be Lego Group’s fifth after Billund in Denmark, Windsor in the United Kingdom, Carlsbad, California, in the United States and Günzburg in Germany.

The skyline of Iskandar is set to change once the 200ha project, with an initial investment of RM800 million, is completed.Legoland will be one of the three theme parks to be built in Nusajaya.Sources said IIB was negotiating with other global theme park players to set up operations in this economic region in southern Johor.They are Universal Studios and Disneyland.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will witness the signing of the deal between Lego and IIB.Legoland theme parks are built from Lego’s interlocking plastic bricks of different colours to create mini structures such as buildings and vehicles, among others. At the Cityscape property exhibition in Dubai in October, IIB managing director Arlida Ariff had been reported as saying that three theme parks were being considered in Iskandar.

“We have learnt from the Disneyland Hong Kong’s experience, which is operating with insufficient visitors and revenue. It is better and more appealing to operate a cluster of theme parks.“If Iskandar has only one theme park, visitors from Singapore may return to the republic the same day.

“We want them to stay at least one or two nights so that there would be multiplier effects on the economy.” The plan at Nusajaya is to have a core theme park and a few smaller theme parks. About 1,200ha have been set aside for theme parks, including supporting commercial developments.

Monsoon Cup Terengganu 2008

Monsoon Cup was first initiated by the Malaysian Prime Minister, Dato Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi during his fishing trip in Terengganu with the state Chief Minister Dato Seri Idris Jusoh and state EXCO Dato' Wan Hisham. The Prime Minister thought the monsoon season should be used as an advantage to the state and her people rather than being seen as a hurdle.(Monsoon season last a few months a year in Terengganu mainly between November and January where the fisherman cant go out fishing due to strong waves.)This idea was then brought forward by the state government where later Dato Wan Hisham became the main organiser under T-Best Event which is a company owned by the state to run the event annually.

World Endurance Championship (WEC) 2008

Welcome to Terengganu!!

In just a matter of days, the much expected and anticipated FEI World Endurance Championships will be underway at the sprawling Terengganu International Endurance Park (TIEP) in Lembah Bidong, situated on the scenic coastline 25km north of Kuala Terengganu in Malaysia. There are 142 riders and horses from 34 countries set to compete, of which 22 have sent teams while the remaining 12 countries will be competing with individuals. As the majority of the horses have now arrived, Malaysia is on the verge of becoming the first Far East country to host a Senior FEI World Endurance Championship, held every two years since it’s inception in 1986, which will also mark the first ever to be held in a tropical climate and during the hours of darkness.

The facilities and venue are of the highest International standard, while the 160km course is designed to provide a safe yet challenging competition, taking riders along the stunning coast line, through palm plantations, along canal banks and through natural vegetation forests.

The Orgainsing Committee wishes the riders, grooms, Chef d' Equipes and Officials who have arrived in Terengganu a warm welcome. It feels great to finally see people from all around the world gathered here in the Terengganu International Endurance Park (TIEP) for the FEI WEC 2008.Besides the very important people participating in this prestigous championship, we have also recieved the arrival of the most fundamental aspect of the championship, which are the horses.

53 horses from Oman, Australia, Malaysia, Chile, Japan, Canada, Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay, Great Britain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, France, South Africa and Norway have safely arrived at TIEP.Some of the horses had to go through a 13 hour non stop flight from Amsterdam just to be here. We are excited to see that the stables are now slowly being filled with the horses and we can't wait to recieve the other horses which are expected to arrive on 20 and 22 October.To all the riders, grooms, Chef d' Equipes and Officials, don't be afraid to ask us for kind of assistance. The Atlantis Hotel

It's the latest word in Gulf excess - a sprawling £800million resort boasting a £13,000-a-night suite and dolphins flown in from the South Pacific, all atop a palm tree-shaped island. Environmentalists have long criticised both the island and some of the features of the Atlantis hotel, set to open tomorrow.

Analysts wonder, separately, if global financial turmoil could someday crimp Dubai's big tourist dreams.But Dubai is not blinking: the 113-acre resort on an artificial island off the Persian Gulf coast is among the city-state's biggest bets that tourism can help sustain its economy once regional oil profits stop flowing. The resort contains a giant open-air tank with 65,000 fish, stingrays and other sea creatures and a dolphinarium with more than two dozen bottlenose dolphins flown in, amid controversy, from the Solomon Islands.

But the hotel's top floor aims squarely at the ultra-wealthy. A three-bedroom, three-bathroom suite complete with gold-leaf 18-seat dining table is on offer for £13,000 a night.Dubai's development has long been criticized by environmental activists, who say the construction of artificial islands hurts coral reefs and even shifts water currents. They point to growing water and power consumption

The Nakheel Tower (Burj Nakheel)

It seems like the Burj Dubai will be dethroned from the “world’s tallest tower” position as (also) in Dubai will be built a one kilometer skyscraper. The tower was designed by Woods Bagot architects and it will be built by Nakheel, the same developer which has built those fancy state-of-the-art man-made islands in Dubai. The skyscraper will be called Nakheel Tower and as a bonus, there will also be built world’s first inner city harbor.

The entire construction area will be of 270 hectares, and when the Nakheel Tower and Harbor will be finished, it will provide enough space for 55,00 inhabitants, workplaces for 45,000 people, and for millions of tourists every year. Although it will be one kilometer-high, the skyscraper will only feature 200 floors, but this could change as the developers don’t want to tell us more about the actual height as rivals could build taller towers.

Nakheel Tower will have four individual towers within a single structure – a groundbreaking engineering feat. A distinctive crescent-shaped podium encircles the base and complements its remarkable height.

"Nakheel has sought inspiration not just from Islamic design but also from the Islamic principles of inclusion, innovation, diversity, excellence, growth and progress. These are the same principles that have motivated and guided Islamic culture and helped create its great cities throughout history. Now they are shaping the cities of the future," enthused His Excellency Sultan Bin Sulayem.

Not only has a development of this shape and scale not been attempted before, but it is also a further example of Nakheel's innovative projects that have changed the way the world looks at Dubai.

The multibillion dollar Nakheel Harbour & Tower development will include 250,000m2 of hotels and hospitality space, 100,000 m2 of retail space and huge expanses of green spaces including canal walks, parks and landscaping. The new development is geographically central to the Emirate of Dubai, at the intersection of Sheikh Zayed Road and the Arabian Canal; and will also complement Nakheel's surrounding developments including Jumeirah Park, Jumeirah Islands, Discovery Gardens and Ibn Battuta shopping mall.
