6th International Conference of IT in Asia ‘09
The International Conference on IT in Asia (CITA) is an international forum run by the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. The conference reflects the increasing focus on issues concerned with ICTs in developing countries. The main aim of the conference is to examine the continuing roles of ICTs within the prevailing challenges of development faced by the region and to investigate how the technology can be adapted to improve local needs as well as to bring technology within reach of the communities.
CITA covers various areas such as data mining, high performance computing, image processing, distributed computing, language technology, wired and wireless technologies. Researchers and industry practitioners in these fields are invited to participate, to share and collaborate research works with experts in this conference.
It is generally acknowledged that the advancement of technologies has improved the quality of life of people all over the world. These technologies enable pervasive access for everyone with ubiquitous devices to ensure a connected global world. However, current technological solutions, no matter how advanced, by themselves are not enough without taking into account the people that use them. This lag is largely due to the fact that human cognitive ability is still not fully understood. While computational capabilities are able to process extra-ordinary volumes of information and solve problems of high complexity, there is a need for these technologies to align and accommodate these limited human cognitive abilities. For example, technologies should be developed to target and address specific cognitive limitations in order to improve human performance. Hence, there is a need to understand how people and technology synergise in a cooperative partnership; a holistic alliance that enhances human potential. These solutions will also need to be embedded into the work and home environment to support human capabilities in a non-intrusive manner.

Saudi Landbridge Project, Saudi Arabia
The Saudi Landbridge Project is a part of the Saudi Railways Organization's railway expansion programme. The project is one of the biggest in the region with an estimated investment of $7bn, and involves construction of 950km of new line between Riyadh and Jeddah and another 115km track between Dammam and Jubail.
It also involves upgrading of the existing link between Riyadh and Dammam. The Landbridge will be the first rail link between the Red Sea and the Gulf and is expected to be completed by 2010.
The Landbridge project is being built on a build, operate and transfer (BOT) system and is expected to have a significant impact on the transport potential of the country. It will allow freight of cargo imported from East Asian countries via King Abdul Aziz Port in Dammam, and from Europe and North America via Jeddah Islamic Port. This would result in more transit cargo and savings in regional freight economy.
Jebel Ali Airport City (Al Maktoum International Airport)
DUBAI will have yet another superlative. This time the world's largest airport, Jebel Ali International Airport (JXB). To be built at a cost of Dhs30 billion, the airport could handle 120 million passengers a year. That will relegate the present topper, London's Heathrow with a throughput of 83.5 million, to the second rank.
Once completed, JXB will be the combined size of Heathrow and Chicago's O'Hare. Again, it will be ten times bigger than Dubai International Airport. The Department of Civil Aviation of the government of Dubai on Monday launched Jebel Ali Airport City (JAAC), a 140 square kilometre development. Central to the JAAC project is JXB.
Announcing the project at the ongoing Dubai air show, Dubai Civil Aviation Director for Engineering and Projects Khalifa Al Zaffin said the project is designed to serve Dubai's passenger and cargo air transportation needs until 2050 and beyond. It will have at least six parallel runways and as many concourses capable of handling more than 120 million passengers and more than 12 million tonnes of cargo per year.
The other Jebel Ali Airport City developments include Commercial City, Aviation City, Residential City, a Golf Resort, a Science and Technology Park and Exhibition City.
The Commercial City, the financial and business heart of the project, will house up to 850 towers ranging from 50 to 300 metres in height.

Yas Marina Circuit
Innovation. Beauty. Comfort. Whether a driver, a racing team or a spectator, Yas Marina Circuit has been designed to produce an unforgettable experience.
Inspired by the culture and values of Abu Dhabi combined with cutting-edge innovation and luxury features, it is a truly unique place.
Yas Marina Circuit is the perfect combination of style and function. The Formula 1™ track (see map reference 01) is 5.55km long. This track can be split in to smaller tracks at 3.1km and 2.4 km each which can operate simultaneously where desired.
Approximately 50,000 spectators can view the action on the circuit from the comfort of permanent, covered grandstands and VIP facilities. Yas Marina Circuit is the only motorsports venue in the world where all of the grandstands are covered.
The Main Entrance (02) brings visitors into the heart of the circuit, passing the Abu Dhabi Motorsports Management building (03) before going under the track to the area behind the Main Grandstand (04) which accommodates almost 7000 spectators opposite the Pit Building (05). The Pit Building has 40 garages for teams and officials and is surmounted by exclusive hospitality facilities. The Team Buildings, which house racing team staff and drivers, are immediately behind while the circuit Medical Centre (12) is at the western end.
Patrons enjoying the spectacular view from the West Grandstand (07) will be part of another world first: the run-off for cars which fail to negotiate the tight turn at the end of the long straight passes directly underneath them.
In fact every seat on the circuit has a very special view. Spectators in the North Grandstand (15) will enjoy an arena atmosphere at the hairpin, while those in the South Grandstand (09) have one of the greatest panoramas in motorsport, looking out over the 500 room, 5-star The Yas Hotel (11), the Marina itself and the Yacht Club (10). The seating on top of the Support Pit Building (08) will not only allow spectators to see the support race action up close but take in a broad sweep of the circuit including critical turns around the Marina.

Bahrain World Trade Center Activates Wind Turbines
You may remember that about a year ago we brought you news of the Bahrain World Trade Center, which was designed to have three giant turbines provide power to the building. Well, this past Tuesday, the project was finally completed, with the final testing and installation of the enormous wind turbines which power the building. This week, Bahrain WTC has, for the first time, activated all three 29m-diameter turbines at the same time!
It may not sound like much, but for such a high profile project, this represents a huge step. When we first brought you news of the project, the turbines had just been installed. And for the past year, all have slowly been tested and balanced, to ensure that they were working properly. But as of now, the project team can lay claim to having successfully incorporated a technology which had never been proven on a building, and certainly not at this scale. The three wind turbines are expected to provide around 10-15% of the power for both towers, representing about 3.5% of the total cost of the project.
“Having all three turbines spinning simultaneously represents an historic achievement for this landmark project and Atkins is excited to have been a major player in turning the original idea into reality” said Simha LytheRao Senior Project Manager for Atkins, designers for the project.

Khalifa City Development
The project, developed in Khalifa City, near Abu Dhabi, was founded on the plan mooted by an international urban planning taskforce, which has two key objectives: to create a comprehensive urban plan to guide the evolution of the city into 2030, and to make recommendations regarding the most effective regulatory and institutional framework to manage the urban development of the city.
The new capital will be a contemporary Arab city reflecting a sustainable economy, rather than uncontrolled growth. The city will respect, be scaled to, and shaped by the natural environment of sensitive coastal and desert ecosystems. In addition, its urban fabric and community infrastructure will enable the social and cultural values of its future inhabitants.
As for the current increase in the residential and office rents that has put great pressure on family budgets and further caused an increase in the pricing of various products, Al Ahbabi added: “The increase in rents is mainly attributed to large sums of money entering the investment market in the form of institutions and companies after they were lying in banks. As a result of the developments in the private sector and the encouraging regulations in the recent years, these sums were taken out of banks and invested in various activities, which led to an increase in the demand for residential units. Although there were new buildings under construction, they did not meet the demand, especially considering that the percentage of demand is constantly higher, while the new buildings need time to be completed. The average time needed for a building under construction to be completed can be as long as two years, which represents a long gap between supply and demand, and it raises prices.”
